Week 12: Working with text

JavaScript code typing course. 21 wpm, 93% accuracy.

Programs often work with text: they join two pieces, measure how long a word is, or pick part of it. In JavaScript you join strings with +, as in "Hello" + " world", and you read a property with a dot, as in "abc".length, which gives 3. Strings need quotes at both ends, and the spaces inside them count. This week you practice typing quotes, plus signs and dots together so each line stays accurate.

What you will learn

This week uses three symbols on the US English layout:

  • " is Shift plus the apostrophe key. Press Shift with the opposite pinky and the apostrophe key with your right pinky.
  • . is the period key, pressed with your right ring finger.
  • + is Shift plus the = key. Press Shift with the opposite pinky and the = key with your right pinky.

Practice with "Hello" + " world" to join two strings and "abc".length to read the length of one. No new keywords appear this week.

Technique tips

  • Type both quotes before the text, so no string stays open.
  • Put a space on each side of +, as in "Hello" + " world".
  • Keep the period key on your right ring finger and avoid moving your hand toward it.
  • Check that the space inside " world" is there, or the words run together.
  • Type the dot and the property name as one unit, such as .length, rather than pausing between them.

Lessons

  1. Learn (10–15 minutes): Watch the keyboard demo for ", . and +, then type each symbol a few times.
  2. Practice (10–15 minutes): Type "Hello" + " world" and "abc".length again and again.
  3. Review (10–15 minutes): Take the two-minute test and focus on closing every quote.

This week’s goal

Your targets are 21 WPM and 93% accuracy. Finishing the week earns one star. Reaching 93% accuracy earns two stars, and reaching the speed target as well earns three. A missing space or an unclosed quote changes what the text outputs, so get each line right before you speed up.

The colored keys are the ones you learn this week. The color shows which finger presses the key.
