Getting started

What is touch typing?

Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard, with each finger responsible for its own set of keys. Once it becomes a habit, your eyes stay on the screen and your attention stays on what you are writing.

Should I learn the Q keyboard or the F keyboard?

That depends on the keyboard layout your computer uses. The Q layout is the most common in Turkey. The F keyboard is a layout designed specifically for Turkish. If you are not sure, start with Q. Both courses are on the site, so you can take the other one later.

How long does it take?

Each course has 16 weeks and 48 lessons. Each lesson takes 10 to 15 minutes. Three lessons a week gets you through a course in 16 weeks, but everyone’s pace is different. Some people move faster, others repeat a week. Both are fine.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it is free. There are no accounts, sign-ups or logins. Open the site and start.

Progress and data

Where is my progress saved, and how do I move it to another device?

Your progress, stars, streaks, theme and language choices are stored only in your own browser. None of it is sent to us. To move to another device, export your progress as a code, then import that code on the new device to pick up where you left off. Be aware that clearing your site data in the browser deletes your progress, so save your code first.

How is words per minute (WPM) calculated?

We count five characters, spaces included, as one word. Gross speed is the total number of characters you typed, divided by five, divided by the number of minutes. Net WPM subtracts the characters you got wrong, so typing fast with many mistakes does not raise your net score.

What is a good typing speed?

As a rough guide, 20 to 30 words per minute is a reasonable start for beginners. With regular practice, 40 or more is a good level for many people, and 60 or more is quite fast. These are general guidelines, not official standards. The real goal is to beat your own previous scores.

At what age can someone start?

In general, a child can start once they can read and their fingers can reach the keys comfortably. For many children that is around age 7 or 8. This is only general guidance, since every child develops differently. Young children should use the site with a parent or teacher nearby.

Practice and tests

Which test language should I choose?

You pick the language of the test text. Practicing in Turkish builds your habits on the Turkish layout, while English texts are useful for English writing and for code. Start with your first language, then move on to the other.

How long should a speed test be?

The tests offer 15, 30, 60 and 120 seconds. For beginners, 30 seconds is a good start. Longer tests show whether you can keep your focus and rhythm over time. If you want to compare results, use the same duration each time.

How often should I practice?

Three lessons a week, plus a few minutes of practice on the other days, is a good balance. Short, regular sessions build a lasting habit better than long, rare ones. If you missed a day, do not worry. Just pick up where you left off.

How do I reset my progress?

To reset your progress, clear this site’s data in your browser settings. This also deletes your lesson progress, stars and streaks. Export your progress first, because deleted data cannot be recovered.

Courses and content

Can teachers use klavye.tech in class?

Yes. You can show lessons on a projector, or have students follow along on their own computers. Progress lives in each person’s own browser, so the site has no class lists and no student tracking. Each student sees only their own progress.

Why are there code-typing courses?

When you write code, the symbols matter as much as the letters: brackets, semicolons, quotes and indentation. Practicing them until your fingers find them without searching helps you keep your attention on the logic. The courses cover Small Basic, Python, C#, C and JavaScript over 16 weeks. They are typing courses, not programming courses.

Does the site work on phones and tablets?

Reading the blog and the guides works on any device. Lessons need a physical keyboard, so we recommend a computer or a tablet with a keyboard attached.

How do I delete a result I shared?

When you press Share, a link is created. Email that link to iletisim@klavye.tech and we will delete the result. Shared results contain no name, email address or other personal data, only typing measurements. Shared result pages are not indexed by search engines.

Why are there ads?

Ads help keep the site free. They are clearly labeled “Advertisement” and kept separate from lesson content. Because this is a family-friendly site, sensitive ad categories are blocked. Where required, personalized ads only appear with your consent. You can change your choice at any time from the “Cookie preferences” link in the footer.

Is my data safe?

There is no account, so there is no profile of you on our side. Our hosting provider processes basic server logs, such as IP addresses, for security and operation. For details, read the Privacy Policy and the Personal Data Protection Notice.
