Week 9: Punctuation

QWERTY touch typing course. 24 wpm, 93% accuracy.

Punctuation gives a sentence its rhythm. A comma in the wrong place or a missing period can change how a sentence reads. This week you do not learn new letter keys. Instead you practice the punctuation keys you have already met, using Shift where needed and placing each mark exactly where it belongs.

What you will learn

This week practices these marks, which you already know from earlier weeks:

  • ,: comma, typed with the right middle finger
  • .: period, typed with the right ring finger
  • ;: semicolon, typed with the right pinky
  • :: colon, Shift plus ;
  • ': apostrophe, typed with the right pinky
  • /: slash, typed with the right pinky

The comma, period and slash are all on the right side of the bottom row, so your right hand does most of the work. Shift is pressed with the pinky of the opposite hand.

Technique tips

  • Keep your right hand steady while you reach for the bottom row punctuation. The movement should come from the finger, not from the wrist.
  • For the colon, hold Shift with your left pinky and press ; with your right pinky. Release both keys together.
  • Type the word, then the punctuation mark, then a space. Avoid spaces before commas and periods, since they make the text look wrong.
  • Pause briefly after a period. This builds a natural rhythm and helps you catch mistakes before they pile up.

Lessons

  1. Lesson 1, learn (10–15 minutes): Watch the keyboard demo for the punctuation marks in this week. Press each one with the correct finger and include the Shift versions.
  2. Lesson 2, practice (10–15 minutes): Type short sentences and place the marks in the right spots. Use commas inside sentences and a period at the end.
  3. Lesson 3, review (10–15 minutes): Repeat the marks you mix up most often, then finish with the 2-minute test.

This week’s goal

Reach 24 WPM and 93% accuracy. Finishing the lessons earns 1 star. Reaching 93% accuracy earns 2 stars. Reaching 24 WPM as well earns 3 stars. Punctuation errors are easy to miss while you are typing, so check your text after each sentence. Clean sentences matter more than fast ones at this stage.

New keys this week

The colored keys are the ones you learn this week. The color shows which finger presses the key.
