Week 4: Top row: reaching index and ring fingers

Turkish F keyboard course. 14 wpm, 91% accuracy.

Last week you reached up with your middle and index fingers. This week the reach gets a little longer. Your index fingers move to o and d, and your ring fingers move to g and h. These keys sit farther from the home row, so accuracy matters more than usual. Make each reach slow and controlled. That is the main work this week.

What you will learn

Four new keys and their fingers:

  • o: left index
  • d: right index
  • g: left ring
  • h: right ring

Your left index finger reaches to o, and your right index finger reaches to d. When your ring fingers reach to g and h, keep the neighboring fingers still. The reach should come from one finger at a time.

Technique tips

  • Keep the fingers next to the reaching finger still on the home row. When the ring finger reaches for g or h, check that the middle finger has not moved.
  • For o and d, lift the finger up, but do not slide your whole hand forward. The hand stays where it is.
  • g and h can feel awkward with the ring fingers at first. Move slowly and steadily. Use precision instead of force.
  • Return the finger to the home row right after the reach. Coming back matters as much as going out.
  • Look at the screen rather than at the keys. Try to sense where your finger is.

Lessons

  1. Lesson 1 (10-15 minutes): Learn the new keys. Watch the keyboard demo, follow the reaching fingers, and type o, d, g and h once each.
  2. Lesson 2 (10-15 minutes): Practice. Type short Turkish words that include all four keys, and bring your hands back to the home row after each word.
  3. Lesson 3 (10-15 minutes): Review and take the 2-minute test. Look at the keys you missed and give them an extra short round.

This week’s goal

Your targets are 14 WPM and 91% accuracy. Finishing the lessons earns 1 star. Reaching the accuracy target earns 2 stars, and reaching the speed target in the closing test earns 3 stars. Mistakes on the reaching keys are normal. What matters is returning your finger to the right place after each one.

New keys this week

The colored keys are the ones you learn this week. The color shows which finger presses the key.
