Week 1: Home row and posture
QWERTY touch typing course. 8 wpm, 90% accuracy.
Touch typing starts with the home row. Eight fingers rest on eight keys in the middle row, and each finger is responsible for its own keys. This week the goal is not speed. It is placing your hands correctly and building the habit of returning to the same spot every time. Once your fingers know where home is, every later week builds on that base.
What you will learn
This week introduces eight keys. Each one has a finger assigned:
f: left index fingerj: right index fingerd: left middle fingerk: right middle fingers: left ring fingerl: right ring fingera: left pinky;: right pinky (with Shift it types:)
The physical F and J keys have small raised bumps. Find them with your index fingers without looking. That tells you where home is, and you can return to it at any time.
Technique tips
- Rest your left fingers on
a s d fand your right fingers onj k l ;. Return to these positions after every key you press. - Keep your wrists floating above the keyboard, not resting on the desk. Let your thumbs hover over the space bar.
- Look at the screen, not at the keys. Trust the bumps to guide your index fingers.
- Keep your back straight, your feet flat on the floor and your shoulders relaxed. Comfort makes longer sessions possible.
Lessons
- Lesson 1, learn (10–15 minutes): Watch the keyboard demo for each new key, then press it with the correct finger. Repeat the drills until all eight keys feel familiar.
- Lesson 2, practice (10–15 minutes): Type short words built from these keys. Go slowly and aim for clean letters rather than speed.
- Lesson 3, review (10–15 minutes): Repeat the keys you find hardest, then finish with the 2-minute test.
This week’s goal
Reach 8 WPM and 90% accuracy. Finishing the lessons earns 1 star. Reaching 90% accuracy earns 2 stars. Reaching 8 WPM as well earns 3 stars. Accuracy comes first. Slow, clean typing builds the habit that makes speed possible later.
New keys this week
The colored keys are the ones you learn this week. The color shows which finger presses the key.
This week’s lessons
Do the lessons in order. Each one ends with a test, and your best result is saved.
