Week 2: Complete the home row
QWERTY touch typing course. 10 wpm, 90% accuracy.
The home row has eleven keys. Last week you learned eight of them, and this week you add the last three. Once they feel natural, both hands can reach every key on the home row without moving away from it. The real skill this week is reaching for new keys while keeping the hand position you built last week.
What you will learn
This week introduces three new keys, each with its own finger:
g: left index fingerh: right index finger': right pinky (with Shift it types")
The g and h keys sit right next to the f and j bumps, so your index fingers only move one key sideways. The apostrophe is at the far right of the home row, where your right pinky rests.
Technique tips
- Your left index finger slides one key to the right from
fto reachg. After pressing it, return straight tof. - Your right index finger slides one key to the left from
jto reachh. Move only that finger and keep the rest of your hand still. - Your right pinky stretches a little to the right from
;to reach the apostrophe. Lift it from the knuckle, not from the wrist. - After every reach, return the finger to its home key. This habit matters more than any single key.
Lessons
- Lesson 1, learn (10–15 minutes): Watch the keyboard demo for
g,hand the apostrophe. Press each one with its finger and repeat until the reach feels comfortable. - Lesson 2, practice (10–15 minutes): Type short words that mix the new keys with the old home row keys. Focus on accuracy in every word.
- Lesson 3, review (10–15 minutes): Repeat the keys you find hardest, then finish with the 2-minute test.
This week’s goal
Reach 10 WPM and 90% accuracy. Finishing the lessons earns 1 star. Reaching 90% accuracy earns 2 stars. Reaching 10 WPM as well earns 3 stars. If your speed feels slow, keep your letters clean. Accurate typing gives speed a solid base to grow on.
New keys this week
The colored keys are the ones you learn this week. The color shows which finger presses the key.
This week’s lessons
Do the lessons in order. Each one ends with a test, and your best result is saved.
